This pattern is knit in one piece, in the round.

Note: When knitting through a yo from a previous round, always knit through the back loop.


Materials needed
<50 yds worsted weight yarn
Size 8 dpns
Tapestry needle

Knitting the Feather
Cast on 3.
Knit an I-cord for 1.5″.
Round 1: In first stitch: k1f, k1b, k1f, k1b. In second stitch: k1f, k1b. In third stitch: k1f, k1b, k1f, k1b. (10)
Divide stitches between 3 needles and join to work in the round.
Round 2 and all even rounds: knit all stitches.
3: k2, yo, k1, yo, k1, k1fk1b, k1fk1b, k1, yo, k1, yo, k2. (16)
5: k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, k1fk1b, k1fk1b, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3. (22)
7: k2tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k4, ssk, k2tog, k4, yo, k1, yo, k2, ssk
Repeat round 7 for all odd rounds until feather reaches 1 inch short of desired length. If desired, switch to a different color for the tip of the feather at this point.
Repeat round 7 once more.
Knit 3 rounds, then begin decrease rounds.
Decrease round 1: k2tog, k7, ssk, k2tog, k7, ssk
2: k
3: k2tog, k5, ssk, k2tog, k5, ssk
4: k
5: k2tog, k3, ssk, k2tog, k3, ssk
6: k
Divide stitches evenly between two needles. Sew the tip of the feather together using Kitchener stitch.

    Wow, these are great! Have been looking for feather patterns, 2- and 3-dimensional, for some time … I’m just not clever enough to design my own.
